Blueberries are near the top of the list when it comes to antioxidant activity per serving (ORAC values). Blueberries mix well with most other ingredients and add an interesting dimension to most smoothie recipes.
Blueberries are sometimes much more expensive than other berries so when you do come by a good deal, typically when they are in season you might want to purchase more than you need and freeze the rest for later so you always have them on hand.
You can also often find frozen blueberries in your local grocery store available both organic and not. Because they are a bit more expensive, they often are combined in other berry medleys with less expensive berries, which keeps the cost down.
When I plan to use blueberries I try to combine them with other ingredients that do not overpower the blueberry taste so I can truly enjoy the flavor. I find that a juice base like grape juice bumps up the sweetness of the blueberry but does not overpower it too much like if I was to use orange juice. My ideal blueberry smoothie recipe incorporates blueberry with some kind of cream base like yogurt or milk type of beverages and maybe something like banana to bump up the sweetness while not distracting too much or overpowering the blueberry.
You might want to add your sweetener of choice to some of the recipes you will see below depending on your personal sweet tooth. Sometimes you get a batch of more tart tasting blueberries while other times they are more sweet so I’m always ready to adjust my recipes on the fly just like when I’m cooking a meal and notice I need to add another dash of seasoning.
Here are few of my favorite blueberry smoothie recipes:
Blueberry Banana with Yogurt:
1 cup frozen blueberries
½ banana
½ cup plain or vanilla yogurt
½ grape juice
Blueberry Grape:
1 cup frozen blueberries
½ cup frozen red grapes

½ cup water ( to mellow it out a bit if needed)
Blueberry Pomegranate:
1 cup frozen blueberries
¼ cup of pomegranate juice
¼ cup of grape juice
