Smoothies are a great way to support healthly weight loss.  When done right, they are a satisfying meal replacement, can boost your metabolism, keeps your appetite in check, are fiber rich, and can give you a sustained energy boost for the day.

A smoothie for weight loss is a very different creation than one of those super-sweet, fruit based, sugar loaded, coma inducing conconctions you might find at a local smoothie chain with those mouth watering creative catchy names.

The key to an effective weight loss smoothie is to make sure it is relatively low in sugar and is nutritionally well balanced. It's important to limit your use of fruits and fruit juices and add more veggies / leafy greens and incorporate healthy fats and protein.

A great neutral base for your smoothie is cucumber and you can add some water and/or ice cubes to add more liquid. Avoid the temptation to add calorie and sugar dense fruit juices. If you absolutely need a bit of sweetness for flavor, make sure you are sparingly using low glycemic fruits or some sweeter vegetables like carrot or beet root.

Smoothies are also a great way to introduce some extremely nutritious leafy greens like spinach, kale, sprouts that normally don't make it into your meals.

For healthy fats, avocado is a great way to add a luxurious creamy dimension. Remember, if you dont have enough healthy fats in your diet your body will hoard or produce more fat in your body to make up for the deficiency in your diet. You can also add coconut oil, flax seed oil or powder or other various healthy fat sources.

To add protein you can simply add a scoop of your favorite protein powder ( soy, whey, rice, hemp, etc).  Another great way to add protein and some healthy fat is to add regular cottage cheese. ( NOT Fat Free!!!) This will also add a great creamy texture without adding sugar like if you were to add yogurt.

By adding veggies and leafy greens to your smoothies you are also adding fiber which among many, many benefits will also help to keep you feeling full longer and thus keeping your appetite in check.

Try swapping out your current breakfast or lack of breakfast for one of these nutrient dense slimming smoothies and you be amazed and how much more energy you will have while you are working towards a healthier slimmer you.
