Does Lemon Juice Really Burn Fat?

Several diets, both new and old, claim that lemon juice burns fat. As enticing as that idea is, it is not technically true; however, drinking lemon juice regularly can aid in weight loss.

Acids, when hot, can help to break fat down, which is where the idea that drinking hot lemon juice burns fat. However, according to the American Council on Exercise, while lemon juice can burn fat, a person would not be able to drink it at the high temperature necessary to do so.

Despite the fact that drinking lemon juice does not technically burn off love-handles, lemon juice can aid in weight loss. To start, lemon juice drastically improves the capabilities of your digestive system: the potassium and acid that naturally occurs in lemon juice prompts your body to produce more bile, which makes it easier for your digestive system to break down the foods you eat, therefore making it less likely that your body will store excess waste.

The pectin and fiber in lemon juice also helps to reduce feelings of hunger, making it easier for those just starting a calorie restrictive diet to stick with it. In addition to this, some studies have found that high doses of vitamin C, such as those found in lemon juice, can potentially decrease the amount of fat your body stores, specifically in the midsection area.

Perhaps the biggest weight loss benefit to drinking lemon juice is the fact that it helps your body to utilize the nutrients from the other foods you eat most efficiently, giving you the best bang for your buck when it comes to the foods you choose.  Many people also enjoy drinking more water when they have a squeeze of lemon juice in it, which could help assist your body functioning better with the increased hydration.

Lemon juice can also help make many juicing recipes for weight loss taste a bit more appealing.  And let’s not forget, there must be a reason lemon juice is such a key player in many detox programs meant to jumpstart weight loss programs such as the master cleanse.
